Spay/Neuter & Animal Wellness - A Great Success!

On the weekend of May 30th and 31st, Spirit's Mission held the first-ever Spay, Neuter, and Animal Wellness Field Clinic at Saik'uz (Stoney Creek) First Nation, just outside of Vanderhoof, BC. Of the thirteen-member medical crew co-ordinated by Dr Sylvia Hall Andrews, six were from our own Petroglyph crew: Dr Denise Michaud, our AHT Christine Mondou, and our Vet Assistants Erica Thorpe-Doubble, Matison Frank, and Angela Warnock. Joining them were veterinary medical volunteers from Chemainus Animal Hospital (AHT Zoe Russell and Vet Assistant Amanda Pattison), Puntledge Veterinary Clinic in Courtenay (Dr Ken Seaman), Nechako Valley Animal Health Services (Dr Cori Stephen, AHT Kaitlin Loewen, and Vet Assistant Kristina Baker), and Burns Lake (AHT Darci Burch). Working behind the scenes to keep everyone organized were Ashley Paquette from PAH, and Kelly Beal from Nechako.

Saik'uz First Nation has taken the initiative to be pro-active in dealing with pet concerns such as straying, disease and overpopulation by inviting Spirit's Mission to work within their community. For two days, the team worked tirelessly alongside the committed volunteers from Spirit's Mission and their partner groups, Crooked Leg Ranch and the Victoria Humane Society. Over the weekend, we surgically sterilized, vaccinated, and dewormed 30 Dogs and 10 Cats, and conducted 51 Wellness Exams, including vaccinations and deworming.

The team was given a warm reception by the people of Saik'uz, and there were many smiles among these loving pet-owners and team-members alike as we worked together to make a lasting difference in the lives of people and their pets. By the end of the weekend, everyone involved was utterly exhausted, but very, very proud of the work done.

Thank you to all the vets and techs and assistants who volunteered their time and expertise to make this project a reality, and to the companies who sponsored vaccines and medications (Zoetis, Bayer, Boehringer and Merck), which lightened the financial load immensely. Way to go, team!
