Equine Recommendations

Petroglyph Animal Hospital provides a full service general practice to our clients with horses. We emphasize preventive healthcare for your horses, and offer guidance in matters of nutrition, parasite control, vaccination against contagious diseases and best practices for stabling and care. We are pleased to offer our clients whose horses are under our regular care after-hours and emergency services. We have two fully equipped vehicles for ambulatory (mobile) calls, in addition to our purpose built equine hospital.

Drs. Bettina Bobsien and Sylvia Hall Andrews provide most of the routine service to our clients, while Dr. Denise Michaud, who after completing an internship in equine medicine at the Université de Montréal and working in equine practice in eastern Canada, provides some of the emergency and after-hours care. In addition to a wealth of knowledge from her practice experience, Dr. Bobsien has achieved recognition as a board certified specialist in equine practice. As a Diplomate of the ABVP (Equine), she has demonstrated expertise to be granted this credential from an AVMA Specialty Board.

In addition to following our recommended vaccine and parasite control protocols, we also recommend that that horse owners be familiar with the normal vital signs of their horses. This includes collecting baseline information on the horse's morning and evening temperature, average resting heart and respiratory rate, and measuring the horse's regular weight. Petroglyph clients are welcome to bring their horses to the hospital and have the weight checked on our large animal scale. There is no charge for this service, but please let us know when you will be coming so that we can ensure the facilities are not being used for ongoing cases at the same time.

Dentistry:

Veterinarians are educated in the anatomy, physiology and pathology of the equine mouth. They are therefore in the best position to recognise early signs of disease and identify possible problems. We therefore recommend that horses should have their teeth checked at least once a year by a veterinarian. The veterinarian will check for molar caps, periodontal disease, malocclusions, sharp enamel points in need of floating, and dental abnormalities. Most adult horses need their teeth floated annually.
