Equine Recommendations

Petroglyph Animal Hospital provides a full service general practice to our clients with horses. We emphasize preventive healthcare for your horses, and offer guidance in matters of nutrition, parasite control, vaccination against contagious diseases and best practices for stabling and care. We are pleased to offer our clients whose horses are under our regular care after-hours and emergency services. We have two fully equipped vehicles for ambulatory (mobile) calls, in addition to our purpose built equine hospital.

Drs. Miranda Noseck and Reagan Brendle currently provide the majority of the routine service to our clients.

Dr. Miranda Noseck graduated from the Western University of Health Sciences in 2008, then completed an equine internship at the New England Equine Medical & Surgical Center. Dr Noseck joined Petroglyph in mid 2009

Dr. Reagan Brendle is the newest addition to our equine practice. Originally from Campbell River, Dr. Brendle cultivated her passion for the equine community by showing western performance horses, competing in barrel racing, and instructing riding lessons and summer riding programs as a CEF certified coach.

She completed a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Victoria, and attended the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon. Following graduation from the DVM program in 2007, she completed a medical and surgical equine internship at Brazos Valley Equine Hospital in Texas, and remained in Texas for two years in private equine practice. Dr. Brendle's professional interests include podiatry, lameness, and general medicine. Dr. Brendle has extensive experience in equine reproduction, from both her internship and previous employment.

While working with Dr. Deborah Parsons, at JCS Equine Reproductive Services, Dr. Brendle co-authored ‘Strangles: Basic Guidelines for Owners', which is available for download from the link below.

We have also entered an arrangement with Dr Daniele Fritz to share some of the emergency and after-hours care.

In addition to following our recommended vaccine and parasite control protocols, we also recommend that that horse owners be familiar with the normal vital signs of their horses. This includes collecting baseline information on the horse's morning and evening temperature, average resting heart and respiratory rate, and measuring the horse's regular weight. Petroglyph clients are welcome to bring their horses to the hospital and have the weight checked on our large animal scale. There is no charge for this service, but please let us know when you will be coming so that we can ensure the facilities are not being used for ongoing cases at the same time.

Dentistry:

Veterinarians are educated in the anatomy, physiology and pathology of the equine mouth. They are therefore in the best position to recognise early signs of disease and identify possible problems. We therefore recommend that horses should have their teeth checked at least once a year by a veterinarian. The veterinarian will check for molar caps, periodontal disease, malocclusions, sharp enamel points in need of floating, and dental abnormalities. Most adult horses need their teeth floated annually.
